Heuristic Evaluation
Problem: The initial site needed to be updated to the common UI design. Along with that, the site required a review to ensure it complied with design principles and best practices.
Actions: Conducted an initial heuristic evaluation based on Jakob Nielsen’s design principles.
Results: Heuristic rules broken were recorded and assigned a severity. I worked with Product Management team along with design consultants to establish a plan to move forward and prioritize high priotity issues first.
Lessons Learned: This was my first time completing a heuristic evaluation. It was a great learning about design principles and best practices as an introduction to design. It was important that heuristics are “rules of thumb” rather than hard and fast rules. That was something that was hard to get used to. I learned to tred lightly when discussing some of these issues with the developers as they became very protective of their work and certain decisions were out of control due to the abilities of the system. This helped build empathy for all involved.
