Introducing Design

Problem: When I joined the team in 2018, the department was striving to provide one unified system for all connected vehicle capabilities, void of individual product recognition.
Actions: I paired with internal consulting team to level up skills in human centered design. Identified our short-term MVP as the software intake screen. Worked with consultants to perform the following design activities:

  • Stakeholder interviews

  • User testing (with current and future users)

  • Paper sketching

  • HiFi mock-up

  • InVision prototypes

  • Continual design and development iterating

  • Knowledge sharing with engineers

Results: A new creen was designed and developed along with a new navigation structure and menu. Both of these have since had MANY iterations since this project began.

Lessons Learned: UX was a very new concept to Ford and especially to teams traditionally focused solely on functionality and delivery. It was my personal goal to identify ways in which the Design Process could more effectively be paired with the Agile process. I worked to evangelize the value so it sparked the idea taking a phased approach to move our teams toward the idea of a common UI as well as a common code base. It has been 2.5 since this project began and we still have a long way to go still, but teams are becomming more open to accepting user experience and incorporating it into their agile practice.
